Esprit Jamaïque Clarendon 2013-2022 is a Jamaican molasses rum selected by Tristan Prudhomme, an independent bottler specializing in rums and whiskies.
This rum was distilled in March 2013 by the legendary Clarendon distillery, located in the town of Sainte-Catherine, in the south of the island. It is a "Single Estate" rum, meaning that all stages of the production process take place on the estate. It was bottled in January 2022 after 9 years of ageing.
A total of 254 copies were made from this cask, number BB 434512. Like all L'Esprit rums, it has undergone no reduction, filtration or coloring.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, the fresh fruit is clear from the outset, already showing an appetite for battle. They are supported by a discreet but dry and serious woodiness, well toasted, which gives them a certain firmness.
On aeration, a spicy, herbal and sweet note calls out to us. It's indeed a cola-like quality that has taken hold, settling comfortably amidst the fruit and peppery woodiness. With time, a lovely harmony is established, with a vegetal complexity that tugs at ripe cane, and deserves to be lingered over for a long time.
On the palate, the rum shows a full-bodied, funky face, underscored by coppery, slightly iodized nuances and assertive power. The fruit bursts through the door, full of pits, oily, bitter rinds, intense juices and fleshy tannins. The apple and pear nuances that follow bring us closer to whisky, or even a young cognac.
The finish is dry and astringent, with a memory of old wood that is both tannic and melted.
