Mezan Guyana 2008 46°: Description and customer reviews

Mezan Guyana 2008 is a 12-year-old molasses rum from the country's only distillery: Demerara Distillers Limited. We are told that this rum was distilled on a double wooden pot still, which takes us to the famous still on the old Port Mourant plantation.

Mezan 's motto (" Untouched Rum ") is once again respected to the letter, as this rum contains no additives (sugar or coloring) and has not been cold-filtered.

After distillation, it was placed in bourbon casks on site in Guyana. It spent 3 years there, then was transported to Europe, where it benefited from 9 years of continental aging.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose, there's no mistaking the full-bodied character of the English style, and of Demerara in particular. Powdery, almost mineral notes take the lead at first. They gain in warmth as they are joined by roasted nuts.

Aeration develops greediness, exotic fruits generously arrive, and the rum gains a slightly pastry-like character. However, there's no question of falling into a too-easy roundness, and a few coppery notes reaffirm a strong identity.

On the palate, the balance is immediately found, preventing the impetuosity of the rum from overpowering. It's this little pastry potential that develops now, with almond, sweet and resinous aromatics, coconut milk, and then very ripe exotic fruits. The more powdery, coppery flavors are fused with molasses and cane sugar, giving them a unique, gourmet character.

The finish gives way to nuts warmed over a high heat, then to prunes flavored with Armagnac.

"A fine bottling, which manages to tame a strong character, and make it accessible to all without losing its charm..."

I found this rum very tasty and gourmand, with its delicate aromas of exotic fruit, crème caramel and slightly vegetal.
The empty glass gives off aromas of vanilla, wood and caramel, reminiscent of a tasty bourbon. A must-try!
