Père Labat XO 42°: Description and customer reviews

Père Labat XO is a very old agricultural rum produced in Grand-Bourg by the Poisson distillery on the island of Marie-Galante. Nestling in the heart of lush vegetation, this small, traditional distillery is the oldest on the island.

This pure cane juice rum, at least 6 years old, is distilled in a red copper Creole column. This is a limited edition of 3,500.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose, the candied fruit is exotic, very ripe, but ultimately reveals itself in a rather fresh, lively way. In the midst of this rather sweet and fruity initial movement, the cane appears after passing through a light veil of smoke and spice.

With aeration, the fruit becomes thicker and more candied. On the other hand, they're a little less exotic, less passé, so the atmosphere remains bright and colorful. This rum is therefore quite complex, as it's always on the edge between a fresh, fruity cane character and a very candied, warmly humid one.

On the palate, this rum's texture is more fluid and lighter than one might have imagined. Ripe sugarcane rules the roost, its green, candied juice displaying hints of sage, tarragon and velvety aromatics. The candied exotic fruits are tasty but light, simply lending a gourmet support to the cane.

On the finish, the cane juice becomes more cooked and thicker. It then reveals notes of cane sugar and slightly licorice molasses.

"The allure of a very old, well-candied rum that ultimately leaves all the credit to the cane juice..."
