Privateer New England White Rum is an American molasses rum from Massachusetts. It's a rum that pays homage to the ancient tradition of rum making in the days of the New England colonists. The ancestor of the distillery's founder was a Privateer, a privateer involved in the American Revolution at the end of the 18th century.
The molasses used comes from a single farm in Guatemala, and is fermented for 6 days. Distillation takes place in pot stills, followed by column distillation. Reduction takes place over 2 months, to obtain a sweet, fragrant white rum.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with a light but rather round and fruity rum. The first notes that reach us are those of a harlequin candy of a mellow kind, like a well-sweetened melon. We're definitely in the confectionery business, with Haribo bananas and a few coconut meringues.
With aeration, a few ethereal hints emerge, taking other fruits with them, still in a tangy atmosphere. Over time, an almost milky layer settles in, like a sweet red-fruit yogurt.
The mouth and its fluid texture offer us a snapshot of ripe cane on the attack, which quickly melts into soft, tangy banana candy. Lightness prevails in the mid-palate, and the rum swirls delicately on the tongue.
The finish is softly fruity, with crushed strawberries and raspberries giving way to tasty cane sugar.
