Renegade Pre-Cask Dunfermline Column 50°: Description and customer reviews

Renegade Pre-Cask Dunfermline Column is a white rum made from pure cane juice, column-distilled on the island of Grenada. Renegade has planted the Lacalome Red cane variety (B80.689) on the terroir of a former distillery, which was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. It was harvested on "Skean's Field", on the Mango Lane terroir, in 2020.

After fermentation, the juice is distilled on a double Coffey column. The first column has 16 trays with copper bells and 8 collection points. The second is equipped with 19 sieve trays. This modern Forsyths column is operated by hand by the distiller. It enables a wide variety of distillates to be produced.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose, we find an intense, solid cane, with good energy and a rather straightforward character. The balance of this expression is maintained by nuances of lime zest, counterbalanced by a kind of soft white chocolate.

With aeration, the cane retains its firm, decisive character, revealing the heart of its fermented juice. In an iodized movement, the notes of olive, rosemary and pepper take on fullness, not without a certain oily, gourmand sensation.

The palate shows a fine mastery, with a rum that's limpid but not boring. After a fairly dry, lively attack, underlined by citrus zest, comes a rather fat mid-palate that focuses 100% on fresh cane juice. This then develops into a full-bodied palate.

The finish shows a little more of the rustic character of the terroir and fermentation, with an iodized register that ranges from olive to resinous aromas and licorice flavors.

"A very pure expression of cane juice and its fermentation..."

In comparison, Renegade Pre-Cask Dunfermline Pot has a more generous nose, more focused on ripe cane, with a different, less tense energy. On the palate, on the other hand, it's drier, and strongly spiced, almost mineral. What these two expressions have in common is a hint of fermentation on aeration and on the finish.
