Roof Rye 43°: Description and customer reviews

Produced by the Warenghem distillery in Brittany, Roof Rye is a rye whisky made in France.

Distilled in Brittany, it is first aged on site for several years in sherry casks.

It is then shipped to Provence for a further 2 years of maturation in American oak casks. During these last two years, the casks are stored in small warehouses with tin roofs (hence the term "roof"), where the whisky undergoes a wide temperature range, not only throughout the year, but also on any given day. This last stage enables the rye whisky to acquire rich, intense aromas.

Pauline's tasting notes

A lovely classic in the world of Bourbons.
The nose opens with dried vanilla. A hint of coconut fades, giving way to spices.
On the palate, the attack is frank. Spices predominate, peppery notes appear, then a slight dip in the mid-palate lets the vanilla aromas resurface for a woody finish.

On the nose 👃🏻: the nose reveals a very pronounced rye note in the foreground, a little earthy and almost mentholated, with a good dose of vanilla and cinnamon spice. There's also a more subtle fruity touch that practically blends with the oak. As the minutes go by, I get more and more pepper, with a caramelized note emerging.

On the palate 👅: here too, rye takes a major place, really quite pronounced. The intensity is not very great and the palate is relatively dry. There's sweet pepper, that earthy side too, and dry oak that clearly brings nutmeg. Shortly afterwards, I get hints of smoke, vanilla and an almost tannic aspect. Subsequent sips deliver little notes of roasting, which make it nicer.

The finish is moderately long. Here appears a little cocoa side that lasts a short while before returning to rye and nutmeg, with a little more vanilla 👌

Verdict ⚡️: this is a Rye with a taste identity all its own. Nothing to do with the more gourmet American Rye Whiskeys I've tasted to date. The rye has clearly left its mark, having been aged in Spanish wine casks. It's hard to say whether this profile will appeal to most people, but it does have the merit of offering something different and 100% French 🤠 Not quite to my taste, which is very personal, let's remember.
