Rum & Cane Grenada XO Single Barrel is a molasses rum from the Caribbean island of Grenada. It comes to us from Grenada Distillers, a local institution that produces Clarke's Court rum.
West Indies Rum & Cane Merchants is a bottler offering selections of rums representative of their terroir. Always at least 6 years old, they undergo no addition, coloring or filtration. In this case, a single cask (ex-bourbon) was used to produce 360 bottles after 6 years of aging.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with a fairly light, fruity rum. Tart notes are carried by a fresh alcohol that hovers above the glass. A bouquet of spices adds gourmandise and a rather discreet air of pastry.
Aeration continues to develop a fresh, light alcohol that takes a very flowery turn. A slightly greasy solvent is reminiscent of lavender essential oil. Deeper down, we find a full-bodied, exotic fruitiness, typical of the English style, with a light copper note.
The palate is balanced, with full-bodied exotic fruit diluted in a tangy syrup. A hint of copper adds character, reminiscent of fruit brandies coming out of the alembic. The blanched nuts then mingle with a slightly spicy alcohol.
The finish is fairly light, on a slightly spicy cane sugar syrup.
"An English style approached with lightness and freshness..."
