Savanna Grand Arôme Lontan 60 ans LMDW is made from molasses from the Bois Rouge sugar refinery, next to the distillery, and its main feature, which gives it the "grand arôme" label, is a long fermentation, lasting 15 days instead of the usual 1 to 3 days for a classic rum.
Another special feature is that it is bottled at its natural alcohol content.
This is a limited edition of 1000 bottles. Each bottle is hand-numbered.
Nico's tasting notes
Like Lontan 40°, this great aroma rum opens with a very strong scent of green olive in brine. It's fresh, heady and heavy at the same time. It remains straight and stubborn for a good while before opening up with very ripe pineapple and papaya. The banana is there too, even riper, it has completely faded. The brine side hasn't calmed down yet, it now introduces something saline, almost like anchovies. It is a nose that sticks to the nostrils and which then takes us into a more vegetal world, into a heather moor. Then it becomes more rum, more cane, before taking on a creamy strawberry and crushed raspberry color.
A turn of the glass and it becomes coppery, metallic. After the strength of the alcohol, we find a more typical and rounded molasses rum which draws on a pastry almond cream. Finally, we are surprised by some almost agricultural cane notes (white pepper and combava).
The palate is lively and salty, we return to heather with aromatics such as thyme or rosemary. It is of course more lively than the 40° version, less creamy and fresher. The green olive brine is still present, it's really full, rich, generous. The bitterness of a candied lemon hits the palate and makes you salivate. It is with this saliva that the rum melts into a sort of grenadine syrup with the slight bitterness of a rosé wine and the deliciousness of licorice.
The rum is therefore round on the finish, with good heat. It is very long on the palate, with hints of olive and overripe pineapple. A hint of saltiness prolongs the tasting experience, deglazing the honeyed, candied notes.
"Savanna goes one step further with this "navy proof" grand-arôme which, while not round throughout the tasting, explodes its multiple flavours thanks to its high degree..."
