This Swell de Spirits - Caol Ila 2010 Rum Cask Finish is a single malt Scotch whisky produced by the renowned Caol Ila distillery on the island of Islay.
This peated single malt was distilled in 2010 and then selected by French independent bottler Swell de Spirits, who added their personal touch by putting it in a cask that had previously contained Jamaican rum.
This unique cask was bottled without reduction in April 2022 in 360 units.
It has a natural color and has not been chill-filtered.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose offers us a seaside, smoky air, with peat, ash and salt-laden vegetation. The malted cereal is coiled deep in the peat bog, but also within a soft, gently spicy oak.
The aeration emphasizes the ashy character, and the atmosphere becomes colder and more mineral. We're approaching the edge of the granite cliffs, and the blacker-than-ever cereals are almost licorice-like.
The palate is less peaty and less mineral than one might have expected. On the contrary, the palate is quite round and luscious, with the smoke moving more towards spices, pepper and highly infused green tea. A hint of malted, fermented cereal comes through on the mid-palate, bringing a satisfying sense of authenticity.
The finish continues on this natural, savory note, with toasted barley.
"A nose that evokes the wilderness and gives way to a comforting mouthfeel..."
