Wagemut x Cognac Expert Foursquare finish Cognac and Pineau 43.6°: Description and customer reviews

Wagemut x Cognac Expert is the fruit of an idea born in Charente and realized in Germany.

When Max from Cognac Expert met Nicolas Kroeger from Wagemut Rum in 2021, the idea of a collaboration was born. These two enthusiasts had the idea of combining their respective passions for rum and cognac to create an exceptional product. Their wish is to bring rum into the culture of the Charente and Cognac regions.

They selected a Barbados rum from the famous Foursquare distillery. This traditional English rum, then aged 12 years, underwent a double finish.
First, three Cognac barrels were used. These barrels were selected by the two friends in the cellars of the Moisans distillery. It was during this journey through the Charente that Nicolas had the idea of a second finish.

By dint of tasting local produce, Nicolas is seduced by Pineau des Charentes. This fortified wine, aged in French oak barrels, offers a surprising range of aromas, and it's this point that prompts the duo to take a few empty barrels with them.

Once all the elements have been brought together in the Wagemut cellars in Germany, the work can begin. Only after 3 months in each type of barrel is the rum bottled.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose, the rum is immediately coated in a veil of gourmet fruit, like a syrupy glaze of ripe plums. The toastiness of the bourbon barrel has been enriched by the tannins of the cognac barrel, all blended together, bringing relief and depth without damaging the lovely patina of time.

With aeration, the fruit becomes more expressive, more alive, and we now turn to a register of ripe peaches and melons, underlined by a thickness of blond tobacco. The harmony is unbroken, as we slip quietly into a spicier woodiness, inhabited by nuts.

On the palate, fruit is once again at the forefront, and it's easy to understand the dual Caribbean-Cognac culture of this rum. More surprisingly, these long-ripened fruits bring extra color to the rum, giving it an almost "funky" edge and taking it into even more exotic aromatic territory than its origins. A little acidity and a pinch of spice keep it lively throughout.

The finish is greedy, with a hint of pastry drawn by almond and kernels.

"A Foursquare totally turned upside down by the Charente, for a result as complex as it is gourmet..."
