This NYE-WK rum is part of the Unaged White Rum series from Czech bottler and distributor Warehouse #1. It is distilled from molasses by New Yarmouth Estate.
The mark for this rum is high and quite rare among independent bottlers. It is NYE/WK, with esters ranging from 1,500 to 1,600 g/hlap.
The initials WK stand for Winston Kennedy. This man was an important figure in the Jamaican sugar industry for over 50 years. In particular, he worked at the Hampden Sugar Factory and the Long Pond Sugar Estate.
Nonetheless, his biography is full of grey areas. Whether or not he worked for New Yarmouth Estate remains to be confirmed.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, don't go near a flame! The volatile aromas of varnish and nail polish remover are very powerful and leap to the nostrils before perfuming the whole room. A few fruity notes nestle in every nook and cranny, however, revealing some very ripe passion fruit and pineapple.
Aeration does nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of this rum, but introduces a few touches of bitterness (passion fruit seeds, cherry pits, but also combava zest). A few metallic notes evoke a burning stainless-steel still, and sometimes dried, salted plums.
On the palate, there's a rather unsuspected greediness, initially due to a rather oily texture. Despite its obvious strength, the carefully sipped rum envelops the taste buds in an exotic fruit syrup. Highly aromatic, both tangy and candied, it is almost sweet, arousing the sweet tooth.
The finish is long and somewhat briny, with green olives and a handful of cherry pits.
