Westland American Single Malt comes from a distillery in Seattle.
This whiskey is made from malted barley grown in Washington State. It is aged in new American oak barrels in cool, damp cellars on the Pacific coast.
No cold filtration before bottling for this original and successful whiskey.
Tasting notes from Thomas
The nose is unmistakably gourmand. A novel blend emerges, with flowers (jasmine, hibiscus, poppy) accompanying citrus (bergamot, lemon, yuzu zest) and custard. Then the roasting takes over. In fact, cocoa powder and green coffee join this profile, which remains sweet without sinking into sugar excess.
Aeration adds more woody notes, leading to encaustic, cappuccino, speculoos and lime. Discreet spices add complexity (nutmeg).
Round on the palate, with a full-bodied texture. The palate opens with flavors of café au lait, cocoa powder and cereal cookies. Citrus fruits (lemon, bergamot) soon make an appearance, along with hibiscus and jasmine. Finally, a touch of wood and spices (nutmeg, ginger) give a drier twist. Then poppy and lemon shortbread reappear.
The finish is tender but firmly in place. Cereal cookies (lemon-poppy), green coffee, lime and waxed wood provide a comfortable finish. A little vanilla emerges with roast after a few moments. Then, a slight woody bitterness settles delicately on the tongue.
" An atypical whisky that offers lovely balance and a beautiful aromatic range..."
