William Hinton 6 ans 40° : Description and customer reviews

William Hinton 6 ans is an agricultural rum from the island of Madeira. Rums from this superb island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean benefit from the "rhum agricole" appellation, as do those from Martinique, Guadeloupe, Guyana and Réunion. They are also covered by the "Rum Da Madeira" Protected Geographical Indication.

This pure cane juice rum has been distilled in the traditional column process. It is aged for at least 6 years in French oak barrels. At the end of this period, the aged rum is placed in casks of various origins (including Madeira wine casks) for a further year. All the barrels are then blended to produce this cuvée.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is immediately available, and opens with a vegetal register, wrapped in a delicately spicy woodiness. The cane sits comfortably, draped in honey and almond milk.

Aeration allows the oak to show through even more. It's typical of the island's rums, with a vinous side and notes of tobacco and black tea. The mellow cane carries a few hints of yeast, but is always well rounded, with a hint of cherry pit.

The palate is very smooth, with a discreet entry leading to a tasty mid-palate. The woodiness is enveloping and greedy, lining the palate with vanilla, brioche cane and blond tobacco. A darker side of black tea and pepper follows.

The finish is round and concentrated, like a good maple syrup with a hint of vanilla.

"A delicious rum that coats the cane with a rich, generous woodiness..."
