Bacoo

The Bacoo is a legendary figure in Caribbean folklore , which explains the unsettling goblin face depicted on the bottle. According to tradition, this little spirit was often imprisoned in old rum bottles, carefully sealed with a cork. Once freed, the Bacoo had to be appeased with offerings, particularly bananas and milk; otherwise, it would take mischievous delight in moving objects, haunting places, and playing tricks on its owners. On the other hand, when satisfied, the Bacoo becomes benevolent and, according to legend, capable of granting wishes .
Although every bottle of Bacoo rum indicates production and bottling in the Dominican Republic , the brand originates in the United States (home of Sans Wine & Spirits Co. ). Specializing in the import of spirits from Mexico and Latin America, the company offers, among other things, sugarcane brandies, mezcal, tequila, Rompope liqueur, and sangrita. Launched in 2016, Bacoo rum, like Barceló rum, is produced at the AFD distillery in San Pedro de Macorís . This distillery, renowned for its environmentally friendly practices , is considered one of the most sustainable in the world.
The brand uses local production methods and ingredients in order to preserve the environment while offering product quality.
Unlike most Dominican rums, Bacoo rum is made from pure sugarcane juice , not molasses. After fermentation, the juice is column-distilled , and the resulting spirit is then aged in ex-bourbon barrels . The aging process varies from 3 years for white rum to 12 years for premium bottlings. Read less
