Balmenach is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Cromdale, in the country's main whisky-producing center, Speyside. This region has the highest number of distilleries per square kilometer in Scotland.

It was founded in 1824 by James McGregor, from a farming family, who had been distilling clandestinely with his two brothers for years. He thus became one of the first farmers in the region to obtain an official license, enabling him to distill legally.

The distillery belonged to Balmenach Glenlivet Distillery (1897 to 1930), then Scottish Malt (1930 to 1987), United Distillers (1987 to 1993), and finally Inver House Distillers until today.

The Balmenach distillery now produces 2,000,000 liters a year. The water used comes from the Cromdale spring. Malt is purchased from the United Distillers malting plant. It has a 7.6-tonne stainless steel mashtun and six 40,000-litre douglas fir fermentation vats. There are 6 stills, 3 wash stills of 16,000 liters and 3 steam-heated spirit stills of 10,500 liters. The casks used to mature the whiskies have previously contained sherry and bourbon. Read less
