Cardhu ("Black Rock" in Gaelic) is a Speyside distillery located near Archiestown in Morayshire, Scotland. It was founded by John Cumming in 1824. At first, it was a small seasonal production, distributed very locally. It was even more or less clandestine, as it was not registered with the government.
In 1885, the company moved and tripled its production capacity. Johnnie Walker bought the entire production and eventually acquired the distillery. The Cumming family remained in charge of production, however.
In 1960, major modernization work was carried out on the still buildings, fermentation and storage tanks. In 1970, 3 more stills were added, bringing the current total to 6. Cardhu produces single malts and blends with other malts, and is still part of the Johnnie Walker blend. Read less
