From Cotton to Malt

Despite its youth, Deanston 's history takes us back to the 18th century, when an imposing cotton weaving mill (The Deanston Cotton Mill) was built in 1785 by Richard Arkwright, one of the key players in the British Industrial Revolution.

Following the success of the Deanston Cotton Mill in 1808, the owners established a village to house the workers, and managed to get their own money. By 1841, the company employed a quarter of the population (some 4,000 souls).

Although the mill's role in local life was well established at the time, and despite the installation of electric turbines to meet production needs, Deanston Mill was eventually forced to close as the cotton industry declined.

A recent spotlight

It wasn't until 1965 that the business changed, when blenders Brodie Hepburn Ltd bought out the buildings, operating under the name of Deanston Distillers Ltd. Invergordon took over in 1972, and the first "Deanston" was produced in 1974.

Deanston subsequently closed in 1982, due to the economic crisis, until 1990. It was then bought by Burn Stewart, before being fully acquired by Angostura International Ltd in 2002.

Continuing its conquest of the malt world, Deanston built a visitor center in 2012.

The Virgin Oak and the 12-year-old form Deanston's recurring range, alongside limited editions that are released regularly: for example, an 18-year-old finished in bourbon barrels, a 15-year-old organic (Organic), or a 40-year-old. Read less
