Mars is a Japanese whisky brand from the Shinshu distillery. Its origins date back to the early days of Japanese malts, when Kiichiro Iwai, its founder, sent Masataka Taketsuru (the father of Japanese whisky) to train in Scotland. Although he had been distilling malted barley since 1953, Mr. Iwai didn't open the Shinshu distillery until 1985. The distillery closed in 1992, following a crisis in whisky demand, and reopened in 2011.
The Shinshu distillery benefits from a location that guarantees very pure water. Nestled at an altitude of 800m, it receives mountain-filtered water, perfect for fermentations and reductions. Mars is a seasonal product, distilled only in winter. The rest of the time, it ages patiently in brandy, bourbon or Japanese wine casks. Read less
