Speyburn: praise for discretion

Speyburn is a Scottish distillery located in the Speyside region.

It's one of those distilleries that doesn't get talked about very often. Founded in 1897 by John and Edward Hopkins (John Hopkins & Co), it was designed with the help of Charles Doig. For whisky lovers everywhere, Doig remains the famous architect who invented the pagoda.

Apart from a closure in the 1930s, Speyburn' s history has been free of major setbacks. Acquired by Inver House in 1991, the company was later acquired by International Beverage Holdings.

Speyburn: a typical range

Although most of the production is used to make blends, the distillery has developed a complete range with a fairly light style.

Like its name, Speyburn is classic in its brand-building. There's an ageless whisky, Bradan Orach, a 10-year-old, a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old. A number of official single casks can also be tasted, offering another level of insight into the distillery.

Less well known in Europe than in the USA, Speyburn whiskies are also sometimes found at independent bottlers. Read less
