Abuelo Añejo 40°: Description and customer reviews

Part of the prestigious Abuelo line of Panamanian rums,Añejo is the result of a skilful blending by the Valera Hermanos distillery's cellar master, and three years' aging in small ex-bourbon oak casks. Thanks to Panama 's warm climate and perfect mastery of all the production stages, the rum acquires a rich aromatic palette, a fine balance and a suppleness much appreciated by connoisseurs.

Four international gold medals crown Abuelo Añejo, including two at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Nico's tasting notes

The first nose of this rum is pleasant, softly fruity and flowery. The typical profile of Latin American rums (caramel, vanilla, tobacco...) looms in the distance, but is not obvious at first. Before that, we have some very ripe, crushed and sweet red fruits, followed by other, more exotic ripe fruits that almost give the impression of a rum that's a little heavy, or at least well-flavored. The caramelized sweetness is pleasantly seasoned.
The nose continues to surprise, this time with its freshness. The rum is both light and very fragrant, now with fine spices and spring, acacia or lavender honey. The "garrigue" aspect of the lavender persists, with a vegetal aspect that moves towards rosemary. A hint of industrial (motor oil) and smoky (meat) notes round out this rather well-crafted nose.

The palate is very light and balanced. It's rather simple, a little sweet, with a familiar honey-tobacco-coffee triptych. It then unfolds on deeper, savory notes, more raisin-like and pastry-like.

On the finish, the rum fades from the palate, leaving behind fruity, tannic flavors of red plum.

"After a surprisingly complex nose, this rum offers a very accessible palate with the well-known markers of Latin rums..."

    Robe: Golden yellow

A round, gourmand nose of caramel, coffee, coconut and exotic fruit.

On the palate, soft caramel, vanilla and roasting (café crème, chocolate). A touch of spice.

A short finish of coffee cream and soft caramel.

    Interesting value for money.

A slightly complex rum that sorely lacks length.

    2.5/5
