59° Broken Knee Connecting Rod: Description and customer reviews

Bielle Genou Cassé is a single-varietal agricultural rum from the small island of Marie-Galante. The "genou cassé" variety has little-known origins. We don't really know how or when it arrived on the island. It is characterized by breaks at each node, making its growth somewhat anarchic. Although difficult to harvest, the fiber is tender and juicy, sweet and fruity.

This agricultural rum has been distilled in Savalle columns, and bottled at the traditional Marie-Galante proof: 59%.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose develops aromas of fresh cane, still caught in its dry, peppery bark. An earthy freshness emanates from this dry, deliberate eau-de-vie. Citrus fruits are intense and bitter, like combava zest.

Aeration confirms the rum's dry, rustic character, with a fairly hard bagasse that's beginning to take on notes of fermentation. These add depth, but lag behind our vegetal, peppery bark.

The palate mirrors the nose: dry and rustic. The fresh, peppery cane is sharp and lingers on the tongue, hooking the taste buds. Notes of citrus zest and fermentation (pickles) harmonize very well on the mid-palate, adding a little extra roundness.

On the finish, the rum relaxes and melts a little more. It lingers on the palate for a long time, with an increasingly mellow cane.

On the nose 👃🏻: there's a lovely hint of pastry, and it reminds me very much of my Bielle Premium Ambré, from which it takes its base. This fresh cane is very sweet, honeyed, with a yeasty side and even a hint of almond, almost brioche-like in the end. It's very greedy, and the 59% completely fades away even as you plunge your nose into it. A slight peppery aspect settles in over the minutes, without ever dominating.

On the palate 👅: here, on the other hand, the attack is both greedy and powerful. The palate is full, round, very sweet and honeyed here too. Our cane juice seems cooked, and expresses itself wonderfully, much to our delight. The taste of pepper comes through shortly afterwards, supporting it at the height of its intensity, along with a hint of menthol that flavors the whole.

The finish is long for a white rum. The pepper continues, leaving a hint of bagasse on the palate, neither too vegetal nor too earthy. I love the precision and balance it manages to achieve, always with the juicy cane at the center of the tasting.

Verdict ⚡️: what a pleasure it is to taste this Bielle rum! It may seem simple, but it lacks nothing. It's so self-sufficient in pure tasting, it's a real treat. A happy medium between rums reduced to 50% and crude column rums that some might find too extreme 😅 This is a favorite for me 🥰

This rum is really very good. The cane is really present, with a very soft, sweet side at the start and then a more lively return later on. I'd definitely recommend it, despite the rather high price.
