Brugal Extra Viejo is a flagship rum from the Dominican Republic. The house's maestros roneros were all trained in the Cuban way, from which the Brugal family drew much of its inspiration. The result is a fine, chiselled style, achieved through a unique mastery of blending.
This molasses rum is the result of several distillates, more or less concentrated and more or less aged. They have been aged separately, blended and then aged again. This complex method produces rums that are just as complex. The youngest of the rums in this blend is 8 years old. All have been aged in American oak barrels containing bourbon.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens gently, with a roasted but balanced atmosphere. The nuts are just caramelized, and a hint of smoke still hangs over them. A light, slightly dusty woodiness also awaits us, discreetly, in a corner of the cellar.
Aeration and time allow this woodiness to open up, revealing a rather greedy, albeit restrained, American oak. Vanilla then takes center stage, accompanied by hints of toasted coconut.
The palate is sweet and roasted, just as the nose suggested. Coffee initially coats the taste buds, with dark, roasted flavors. Then toasted and caramelized nuts introduce a rounder nuance.
The finish maintains this impression of roundness, with a ladleful of vanilla and a hint of liquorice in the length.
" A rather light rum that will bring roastiness and roundness to your cocktails... "
