Like all the rums in the Distileria Colombiana range, Dictador 16 ans is a traditional solera-aged rum. The master blender combines old and younger rums in the same barrel, so that the older rums "educate" the younger ones.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose is very dark but still very greedy. Coffee and roasted nuts are caramelized to perfection. The bitter, overcooked caramel is balanced by a certain creaminess, like very toasted bread whose crumb has remained soft.
Aeration loosens the dark cloud a little, and the nuts take on a less colored, blonder, and therefore sweeter caramel. Molasses is at the heart of the rum, blending naturally with toasted wood and roasted nuts.
The attack on the palate is rather balanced. One might have expected a merciless onslaught of grilled, roasted and even burnt notes, but a certain roundness corrects all this darkness. The result is a rather tasty rum, with a variety of nuts and still a little fat despite the onslaught of the grill.
The finish continues on nuts, mostly pecans, with a touch of sweet caramel.
"Dictador's dark, toasty style is respected, but we notice a certain desire for roundness..."
