Produced in a limited edition of 6,000 worldwide, Don Papa Rare Cask will surprise fans of the brand who are used to the 7 and 10 year olds.
In technical terms, first of all, these bottles come from a single barrel and not from a blend. On the other hand, it is not filtered which means that small deposits can be deposited in the glass. Finally, the reduction is lower (50.5° instead of the usual 40°).
The American oak barrels used here are intensively toasted to give the rum empyreumatic and roasted aromas.
Given the small number of bottles we've been able to obtain, and our position in this case, which is to let as many wine-lovers as possible taste our wines, we've chosen for the time being to offer samples for sale, limited to one per order.
Thank you for your understanding.
Nico's tasting notes
In brief: smoky - tarry - black fruits - nuts - powerful - plum brandy
The first nose is very smoky, even tarry, reminiscent of Trinidad rums. It's powerful, with medicinal notes of rubber and especially camphor. Fruits and nuts then spread out under the nose: we have quince, prune, elderberry, and then almonds and all kinds of nuts.
With aeration, the rum is as smoky and tarry as ever, but remains interesting and holds our attention. Berries and dark fruits add to the picture, with redcurrants, blackcurrants and blueberries coming to mind. The medicinal, camphoraceous side then joins the smoky side to sustain the intensity. The rum gradually melts into dark honey, but retains its power with lively notes of mirabelle plum brandy. The nose finally settles on softer notes of cane, caramel and molasses.
On the palate, the plum eau-de-vie is the first to assert itself, with freshness and a fine aromatic presence. The rum rises to power with its smoky, spicy side, followed by notes of strongly toasted wood. There's no sweetness, and this is a fairly intense rum.
On the finish, smoky, tarry notes, with a hint of menthol, characterize this rum.
"A far cry from the brand's usual range, this rum is quite powerful and has a certain character..."
