Flor de Cana 7 ans 90 Proof 45° : Description and customer reviews

Flor de Cana 7 ans 90 Proof is an over-vitaminized version of the classic Gran Reserva. The Nicaraguan distillery produces light molasses rums, distilled in columns. They are aged for 7 years in ex-bourbon casks, sealed with plantain leaves.

Proof is an Anglo-Saxon measure of alcohol content. This measure was once used by the British Navy, and defined "100 proof" as 57.1% alcohol. To determine whether rum reached this level, it was mixed with gunpowder and ignited. If the rum was below 100 proof, it didn't work. If it didn't, we had proof that the rum was in compliance. The Americans adopted this system, with a different scale, such as 100 proof = 50% alcohol. This is why the 45% Flor de Cana is called 90 proof.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose, a small confectionery bubble bursts, releasing notes of smoke, roasting and, more precisely, toasted wood. It's a fairly dry nose, where the most ethereal notes take flight in aromas of flowers (rose, geranium) and fresh fruit such as lychee.

With aeration, the roasted notes gain in thickness, and the smoke takes shape. Rather fatty nuts emerge, lending consistency to this relatively light nose.

The palate is nicely textured, with a pleasant concentration. The nuts are decidedly greedy, like a handful of roasted, caramelized peanuts, chouchou-style. The mid-palate is well rounded and caressed by a veil of full-bodied vanilla.

The finish returns to roasted flavors of caramel-coated roasted nuts.

"A Flor de Caña that is clearly recognizable by its dry, roasted nose, but which develops more roundness on the palate than usual...".
