Grander Rum Single Barrel NM05 Calimadeira 11 years 55.5°: Description and customer reviews

Grander Rum Single Barrel NMO5 is an 11-year-old Panamanian molasses rum. It is part of the Barrel Series collection, which features rums aged in two separate casks.

For this cuvée, the rum spent the first 10 years of its ageing in a barrel that had previously contained bourbon. The rum was then transferred for a further year to a second barrel. This was previously used for a sweet fortified wine from Napa County, California.

A sweet fortified wine is one to which spirits have been added before fermentation is complete. It could be a vintage port or a zinfandel, for example.

This rum is distilled, aged and bottled in Panama from a single barrel. It has not been reduced or filtered.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is entirely in accordance with the color, so it is the brown aromas of the roast register which immediately predominate. The coffee liqueur flows slowly over a generously toasted oak barrel, and the toasted nuts are still steaming.

With aeration, the picture continues with the same nuances. The toasted and caramelized pecan with molasses seems very sticky and intense, the sweet coffee well concentrated, and a touch of orange peel begins to develop.

The mouth is very round at first, but we quickly understand that this sweetness is designed to balance the substantial power of this rum. The roasting notes are a little more recessed than on the nose, so the flavors of the American oak are delicious and enveloped, gently spicy.

The finish is delicious and very round, with strong flavors of toasted pecans, maple syrup and prunes.

“Roundness and power, serving roasted and gently spicy aromas…”

If you like it, we recommend :

  • Another finish in whiskey barrel, with a softer expression...
  • A more robust finish this time, in a peated whiskey barrel...
