La Favorite Brut 2 Colonnes Récolte 2021 is the3rd edition of the brut de distillation rum produced by the Martinique distillery.
Labelled AOC Martinique, this agricultural rum was distilled in April 2021 by the two Creole columns using two distillates from that year's harvest. The older of the two is made of copper (1957), while the other combines copper and stainless steel (1986). The rums were blended, then matured in small stainless steel vats. Bottling took place in February 2022, after 11 months' brewing. For this edition, 4,000 numbered copies were released.
The distillery highlights the expertise of its handcrafted production and the talent of artist Lucas Vallerie, a "local boy" who has captured the soul of the distillery in pencil on this beautiful label. It depicts the mythical steam engine, powered by the energy produced by the combustion of bagasse (sugarcane fiber), which is burned in the furnaces.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, ripe cane caresses the nostrils with its mellow, sweet flesh, before rapidly gaining strength thanks to its considerable power. The rum then expresses itself as lively as it is delicious, with remarkable balance.
With a little aeration, candied bagasse stretches out before us, splashing a few drops of lime. The sweet fiber of the cane is tinged with a rather elegant gray pepper, less pronounced than one might expect from this distillery.
The palate is very round and fat, with the juiciness of ripe, mellow, sweet cane. Concentration is the order of the day, in a delectable mid-palate where soft vegetal and spicy notes coat the palate. The power is there too, of course, but the almost oily side sticks to the taste buds.
The finish is relatively straightforward, with a drier vegetal character.
