La Favorite Cœur de canne vieux 4 ans 42°: Description and customer reviews

La Favorite Cœur de canne vieux 4 ans is an AOC Martinique agricultural rum from an artisanal, family-run distillery, one of the smallest on the island. This rum is made with pure cane juice pressed using a superb steam machine.

It has been aged for 4 years in French and American oak barrels, making it a VSOP rum. It is bottled in the iconic La Favorite bottle, formerly reserved for the famous La Flibuste vintages.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose opens with a sweet, generously caramelized agricultural rum, which is also refreshed by a fragrant woodiness. Cedar, incense, green tannins and raw exotic wood come to mind.

With aeration, the woodiness hardens and joins the cane bark. Both add pepper and India wood, for a dry, full-bodied character. The cane then glides quietly over the oak, taking us back to a more gourmand approach. Lively and fruity, it is nonetheless bursting with sugar.

The palate is very smooth and fluid, with a melted, evanescent woodiness that leaves a trace of pepper in its wake. The ripe cane still bears a little bark, giving it a little structure that helps to direct the mid-palate.

The finish is equally sweet, with a cane of sweet spices and gray pepper.

"An elegant, exotic woodiness that envelops a very smooth cane..."

On the nose 👃🏻: the juice is immediately very fruity, like grapes and especially apples. It's also very vanilla-like, with a honeyed aspect. The oak remains moderate, elegant and perfectly integrated. The cane sugar is quite sweet, but there's a hint of the dryness to come, which doesn't betray its origins. A hint of pepper is perceptible, and aeration brings a pleasant waxed note.

On the palate 👅: there's a stealthy roundness on the entry, with wood and spice taking the lead here. The cane sugar isn't shy, the pepper mingles with our oak, which in turn brings some supple tannins to this ensemble. It remains vanilla and honeyed as on the nose, with subsequent sips gradually gaining in roundness.

The finish is rather long, with lovely, lightly toasted oak and fruity, even cocoa notes at times. This remains dry but the tannins are never aggressive, it finishes smoothly 👌

Verdict ⚡️: this is my first rum from La Favorite. I chose a VSOP because this category generally represents a distillery's signature quite well on a reasonable budget. It's an elegant rum that expresses the Martinique style, which I like. The woodiness is particularly well balanced with the overall greediness 👍
