Longueteau Vieux 3 ans 45° : Description and customer reviews

Longueteau Vieux 3 ans agricultural rum is produced on the Marquisat de Sainte-Marie estate in Capesterre Belle-Eau. It is part of the Guadeloupe-based brand's "classic" range, a symbol of the Longueteau family's historic expertise.

It is essentially a blend of red and blue cane, harvested at the foot of the Soufrière massif. The rum is distilled in a Creole column, then aged for 3 years in oak barrels previously used for cognac.

This version is bottled at 45°, a few degrees higher than the Longueteau Vieux 3 ans 42° to bring out more power.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is a gourmet treat, with a gently spicy, pastry-like profile. The soft wood is imbued with vanilla and tonka bean, and transpires sweet almonds with hints of green. The latter then introduce the softly vegetal side of the cane.

With aeration, the nuts take over and offer a very pastry-like profile, with a lovely thickness of marzipan on which a breeze filled with velvety aromatics blows. The melted woodiness takes on a nougat-like consistency, again garnished with fatty almonds.

On the palate, a lovely, ripe, candied cane expresses itself and brightens the palate from the outset. The pepper then heralds a gourmet oak filled with sweet spices and fatty, lightly toasted nuts, which expresses itself with a well-regulated power.

The finish is both spicy and round, with velvety cane juice and a soft almond paste that once again speaks of cane sugar nougat.

"A very greedy aged rum, with the controlled contribution of a very varied woodiness..."

In comparison, the Longueteau Vieux 3 ans 42% was quite different. Its nose was woodier, with a cedar-like perfume, floral cane, spices, exotic vegetal notes and a strong cognac leaning. The palate was lighter, with a paler cane and fine-grained wood with a delicate toastiness.
