Masam Port Mourant Rum 2003-2021 53.5° : Description and customer reviews

Masam Port Mourant Rum is a very old molasses rum from Guyana (South America). It was selected by the late Silvano Samaroli, Italian bottler and former head of the Samaroli company. Today, his wife Maryse pays tribute to him by continuing his legendary collection of rums and whiskies under the Masam name.

In 2003, rum was distilled at the Port Mourant distillery in the famous double wooden still. This still is one of the oldest in the world (over 250 years old). The distillery closed its doors in 1955, but the still is now back in service, having been transferred to the Diamond distillery.

The rum then spent 18 years in an oak cask in Scotland before being bottled on site in 2021, at its natural proof. This historic cask produced 240 bottles.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is full-bodied, with a graininess that suggests a full, complex rum, where we can already imagine good substance. The nose immediately takes on a pastry and fruit profile, with almonds, raisins, pits, wax and exotic fruit juices.

Aeration takes us back to something drier, fuller-bodied, where the spicy cores almost take on a mineral, coppery shape. The rum's vegetal side is expressed through a spiced straw that has just been lit on fire and is beginning to give off a fragrant smoke.

The palate is lively and full-bodied, with plenty going on already. After a slightly coppery sensation, we are seized by the acidity of lemon juice, followed by more colorful notes such as passion fruit. Spices, almonds and kernels take over, supported by bread forgotten in the toaster.

In the finish, raisins and almonds settle us into a comfortable bath, where our taste buds will be massaged with plum jam throughout.

"A complex, gourmet rum with plenty of character..."
