Mhoba Skukuza Brandy cask Routes 64.1°: Description and customer reviews

Produced by the Mhoba Rum Distillery in South Africa , this rum is made from pure sugarcane juice of the local Nkomazi variety.

Distilled in a traditional pot still using a high-ester approach (472.5 g/hlap), it is distinguished by its remarkable aromatic intensity and particularly expressive profile. Its aging process takes place in two stages: an initial 36 months in ex-South African whisky American oak casks , followed by 11 months in ex-South African Van Ryn's brandy casks . This double maturation process imparts a rich aromatic profile.

Bottled by Mhoba as part of its Itinéraires collection, this single cask is offered in a limited edition, cask strength at 64.1°. Each of the 381 numbered bottles thus reveals the unique identity of its cask.

Jérémie's tasting notes

On the nose:
Floral and ripe fruit aromas rise from the glass. With aeration, the profile evolves towards high ester notes reminiscent of varnish or glue, accompanied by roasted wood and caramel. Over time, the woodiness intensifies while a ripe apricot emerges.

In the mouth:
The attack is direct, almost sparkling, marked by flavors of candied citrus and quince paste, supported by notes of brown sugar. A lovely presence of clove, enhanced by a touch of pepper, adds depth. In the mid-palate, a register of honeyed caramel emerges, harmonizing with notes of toasted wood. In the background, a subtle nuance reminiscent of cherry can be perceived.

The final:
With a pleasing length, it unfolds with notes of roasted wood and spices that delicately stimulate the palate. The touch of red fruit persists, gradually evolving towards darker fruits over time.
