Mombacho 12 ans Reserva Especial is a very old traditional rum that draws its character from Nicaragua's volcanic terroir, but also from the long years spent in the distillery's oak barrels, patiently benefiting from Central America's sunny climate.
Ageing in barrels formerly used for bourbon has enabled Mombacho 12 ans to free itself from the most aggressive tannins.
Nico's tasting notes
At first sight, the nose of this rum is powerful and floral. The alcohol is clearly present, leaving hints of caramel and coffee as it evaporates, as well as a very humid woodiness, like wet cardboard. A greedy sweetness brings to mind a crunchy nougatine or caramelized pralines. The alcohol soon softens and the floral notes take on a patina, reminiscent of beeswax.
The wet wood becomes drier with aeration, and is even a little dusty. The caramel becomes darker and darker. The alcohol picks up in waves, carrying hazelnuts and walnuts in its wake.
Light on the palate, both in aroma and strength, it has a very smooth texture. Caramel dominates, it's still very well done and goes well with well-roasted coffee.
On the finish, the nuts are also very toasty. The toasted, even burnt, character lingers, like the last popcorn from the pan.
