Mombacho XO 43°: Description and customer reviews

Mombacho XO is made from rums that are all at least 21 years old and aged in ex-bourbon casks (burnt oak barrels that previously contained bourbon).

The molasses used to make this rum comes from sugar cane grown on fertile volcanic soil in Guatemala.

Nico's tasting notes

In brief: roasting - wood - mineral - smoke

The first nose is quite expressive and powerful. Roasted nuts immediately take over, leading to an equally toasty woodiness. It's a light rum nonetheless, with present alcohol that conveys a register of sovereign roastiness. The caramel is also well burned, almost mineral. Then, with time, the rum becomes more mellow and relaxes on notes of tobacco and butterscotch, with a spicy edge that maintains the structure.
Aeration confirms a light heart, still clothed in very roasted, increasingly dry notes. Cocoa rubs shoulders with very black coffee, zan and dry wood.

The palate is totally in line with the nose in terms of aromas, but offers a much softer touch, leaning towards tobacco, vanilla and caramelized nuts. A certain sweetness compensates for the bite of dry wood and roasting, which are not forgotten.

The finish is halfway between the two worlds, sweet and dry at the same time, with a touch of charcoal at the very end.

"This rum emphasizes the toastiness of the barrel, which dresses up a rather light alcohol..."

The best XO I've ever tasted. Paired with a Cohiba, it's seventh heaven!
