Montebello 55° is a Guadeloupean agricultural rum produced at the Carrère distillery in Petit-Bourg. Its production comes from canes mainly collected by hand, coming from small planters who work on the volcanic terroirs of Soufrière.
It makes an excellent base for ti'punch and other cocktails.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose is surprisingly smoky and farmy, with a hint of barnyard dotted with dried bagasse. Soft, sweet cane juice gradually comes through, with hints of steamed artichoke and chestnut.
The aeration opens up the rum to the fruit, giving it much more fullness and warmth. The cane juice is now blended with citrus fruits, which express themselves from the skin to the pulp. At the same time, it retains a rustic edge, for a remarkably authentic balance.
On the palate, the farmhouse aspect is preceded by a coppery, slightly metallic sensation. This minerality abounds in freshness and light, so the rum lights up the palate quite brightly. The mid-palate is devoted to thick, ripe cane juice, enriched with pineapple and star fruit juices.
The finish is spicy, with rustic pepper and hay accents.
"A fine rustic personality for this serious candidate for ti'punch..."
