The distillery, originally called the Carrère distillery, was founded in 1930.

After rapid initial growth, the business gradually declined from the Second World War until 1968, when it almost disappeared altogether. It was then that Jean Marsolle and his son Alain, from a family that had been established in Guadeloupe for several generations, bought the distillery.

The distillery is modernized and production is relaunched.
In 1975, it changed its name to Montebello. It became Guadeloupe's 3rd largest distillery in terms of volume.

In January 2012, Alain's son Grégory Marsolle took over the reins of the family distillery. The distillery has again been modernized, and now reuses all its waste (bagasse from pressed cane is used as fuel).

Montebello is unique in that its oak casks are placed in metal containers to accelerate ageing, whereas other distilleries seek to reduce the number of angels... Read more
