New Grove 2010 Single Cask #550 Antipodes 65,2° : Description and customer reviews

This New Grove 2010 Single Cask #550 is a selection from the Antipodes collection. It is a molasses rum produced on Mauritius by the Grays distillery. The distillery was founded in 1838 by the Harel family.
The sugar cane is grown on an estate in the northern part of the island.

This cuvée was distilled in 2010 from twelve varieties of sugar cane after a thirty-hour fermentation. The rum was then aged in a single barrel of new Limousin oak.

427 bottles were bottled in 2022 without reduction, addition or cold filtration.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is immediately concentrated, with a complex mix of black and red berries, fruit jelly, roasting and oily, almost tarry notes. Blackcurrant is the first to stand out, followed by nicely varnished wood - a good start!

Aeration transforms the rum into a thick, silky jam that spreads gently. One is reminded in particular of a guava jam, concentrated and powerful, with a hint of bitterness and copper in the seed slivers. Oak is diffused in the background, providing a lovely, comfortable mattress.

The palate is powerful and concentrated from the outset, with a full-bodied fruit paste brimming with flavors of pits, molasses, oily smoke, tannins and tar. There are crunchy, bitter fruit seeds with a coppery core, which then melt into softer, pastry-like pits.

On the finish, our guava jam is mingled with prunes and dried apricots. This little world stays with us for a long time, then gives way to tannins that are still quite resinous.

"A huge concentration for this rum that pushes New Grove typicity to the max..."

Very good Mauritian rum, fresh and sweet.
