New Grove 5 years Old Tradition 40°: Description and customer reviews

New Grove 5 ans Old Tradition is an old rum that will introduce connoisseurs to the spirit of Mauritius.

This is a complex rum with a strong personality, thanks to its aging in Limousin oak barrels.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose of this New Grove is fairly typical, with smoky, woody and burnt gum notes running through almost the entire range. There's also a hint of metallic, in the same vein as "traditional" rum. Licorice takes its place in this somewhat harsh universe, revealing the deliciousness of thick, dark molasses.
As the glass is shaken, the rum becomes more generous, its metallic character melting with notes of quince jam. Then beeswax and spices take us to a more classic profile of caramel, toasted wood and vanilla.

On the palate, the brand's distinctive character comes to the fore: it's smoky, even tarry on entry. A certain acidity is felt on the tongue. Quince jam and a touch of vanilla flatter the palate.

On the long finish, caramel and a certain salty sensation persist, as does the burnt note that accompanied us throughout the tasting.

"This is the basis of the New Grove profile. If you like this one, you'll have a great time with the rest of the range..."

I didn't like the banana candy side. Otherwise, nice product.

New Grove 5 Years Old Tradition: Declaration of Authenticity The New Grove brand has the distinction of being very young (marketed since 2005), while being the rum brand of a giant, since it belongs to the Grays distillery which has existed since the first half of the 19th century. Originally specialized in the production of sugar and then "neutral" alcohol, Grays now owns no less than 16,000 hectares of sugar cane. At first glance, we appreciated the sobriety of the presentation and the work that was done on the visual identity for a rum at less than €35, it is important to note this, as much for the box as the bottle. By turning the latter over, we can read that nothing has been added to modify the color, the smell and/or the taste of this rum: this is just as appreciable. This rum has benefited from aging in Limousin oak barrels before being refined in port barrels. Our opinion: clearly we are off the beaten track, a little light and lacking in structure, it remains overall quite engaging to try other rums from the distillery. Because of its aromas it should integrate very well in cocktails, even if we personally taste it neat for its taste originality. Nose: rather dry which reminded us of a very ripe pineapple, even stewed, then comes a woody, braised note, with this little metallic hint which dissipates after a short aeration to give way to much more gourmet notes of roasted (chocolate) and vanilla. Palate: on the palate the smoky/tarry/licorice arrives first before giving way to notes of fruit and vanilla. Finish: rather dry with toasted notes of spices.
