Père Labat Black Opus Millésime 2009 42°: Description and customer reviews

Père Labat Black Opus Millésime 2009 is a limited cuvée from the famous Poisson distillery, which has been operating on the tiny island of Marie-Galante since 1916. This agricultural rum was distilled in 2009, using pure cane juice from the Marie-Galante terroir, and was distilled in a Creole column.

The wine was first aged for 8 years in bourbon barrels, as is customary. Then cellar master Fulbert Mavounzi decided to extend this ageing by a further 3 years in cognac casks that had been toasted in 3 different ways. These barrels were then blended for this unique 11-year-old cuvée, limited to 3024 bottles.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is initially quite fine, and vanilla cane aromas gently emerge from the glass. Then comes a small explosion of sweetness, and the cane juice-turned-jam now flows over dry, toasty wood.

Aeration reveals a more concentrated, pastry-like character, typical of a certain Guadeloupean style. Almonds, resin, pits and raisins brighten up the woodiness, which eventually relaxes to reveal notes of sweet spices and blond tobacco.

The palate is melt-in-the-mouth and thick, almost giving the impression of chewing on a fruit paste. Exotic fruits, but also candied citrus peel soaked in rum. Sweet spices inhabit and dress the cane juice, escaping from a soft woodiness like nougat.

The finish is greedy and evolves to the borders of pastry, with creamy notes and pits.

"An unsuspected complexity and roundness for this original and mature profile..."
