Planteray Rum Barbados 5 Years is a signature blend from the French brand Planteray (formerly Plantation). This Barbados molasses rum comes from the West Indies Rum Distillery (WIRD). After a 3-day fermentation, the molasses is distilled in a column still and in a traditional pot-still. These distillates are blended and then aged in American oak barrels that have previously contained bourbon for a period of 5 years.
As always with Planteray, double maturation is essential. Thus, the rums are shipped from Barbados to Charente, where they are transferred to small Ferrand cognac barrels.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with the sweetness of coconut milk and vanilla, and a syrup of sweet spices such as tonka bean, cinnamon and nutmeg. A round, pastry-like ambience emerges from the very first moments.
Aeration reveals more roasting notes, and the profile becomes increasingly spicy. There's also a touch of acidity, greed and sweetness, with a layer of crushed, almost milky strawberries.
On the palate, we're delighted to rediscover the vanilla-coconut flavors of the nose. The roundness and deliciousness of American oak are at their peak, and the rather round, sweet texture adds a little more deliciousness.
The finish is like a little coconut rock with sweet spices.
"All the gourmandise of American oak, with a rum full of coconut and vanilla..."
