Plantation Rum Barbados 5 ans is a signature blend from French brand Plantation. This molasses rum from Barbados comes from the West Indies Rum Distillery (WIRD). After a 3-day fermentation, the molasses is distilled both in columns and in traditional pot-stills. These distillates are blended, then aged in American bourbon oak casks for 5 years.
As always with Plantation, double maturation is de rigueur. The rums are shipped from Barbados to Charente, where they are transferred to small Ferrand cognac barrels.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with the sweetness of coconut milk and vanilla, and a syrup of sweet spices such as tonka bean, cinnamon and nutmeg. A round, pastry-like ambience emerges from the very first moments.
Aeration reveals more roasting notes, and the profile becomes increasingly spicy. There's also a touch of acidity, greed and sweetness, with a layer of crushed, almost milky strawberries.
On the palate, we're delighted to rediscover the vanilla-coconut flavors of the nose. The roundness and deliciousness of American oak are at their peak, and the rather round, sweet texture adds a little more deliciousness.
The finish is like a little coconut rock with sweet spices.
