Santa Maria Gold is distilled in Japan, near Okinawa, from pure local sugarcane juice.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with ripe sugarcane juice, enhanced by a dash of lemon juice. The sugar cane takes on a very green, almost chlorophyllous appearance, and is soon joined by some tangy fruit. Green papaya, guava and young mango dance around a coppery core.
Aeration continues the exploration of this original cane, both green and ripe. Fresh, juicy aromatics, honey and dry, straw-like wood follow.
The palate offers us a very soft, fluffy texture, which counterbalances the coppery aromas glimpsed on the nose. This characterful eau-de-vie offers us a decidedly round but electric cane, with a fresh, spicy alcohol in the mid-palate. It's followed by a dash of lemon that tightens the whole.
The finish takes on a very gourmand side of sugarcane, bordering on marron glacé and milk chocolate, with an ever-present coppery sensation, as well as a long persistence on lychee.
"An original treatment of sugarcane brandy, for delicate cocktails..."

It wasn't the sample but the 70 cl bottle that I bought. The experience was disconcerting but not unpleasant. I offered the bottle to a rum lover more accustomed to Jamaica than to the Land of the Rising Sun for this type of alcohol. Despite the difference in sensation compared to a classic rum, we were pleasantly surprised by the originality of Santa Maria Gold. Note that if you don't like to think outside the box, you'd be better off not buying this product. Personally, I have no regrets about having discovered it.
