This is batch #2 of the famous vintage #1 that made Spirit of the day a success when it launched in June 2024.
This rum from Trinidad Distillers Ltd. was aged for a total of 17 years in an ex-bourbon barrel, including 11 years in the tropics. It was bottled at cask strength.
We quote Romain verbatim, who selected the cask and bottled it: “on the program of empyreumatic, leather and dirty, it is totally extreme and it is magnificent”.
Jérémie's tasting notes
On the nose: intense aromas of well-roasted caramel and generous vanilla rise from the glass. As you approach, smoky and empyreumatic notes take over. Aromas of orchard fruits (pear, green apple) quickly give way to stewed fruits (apricot, peach, prune), accompanied by cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. With aeration, notes of medicinal herbs, a light touch of menthol, blackcurrant, pomegranate, and a more subtle hint of pineapple emerge.
On the palate: the attack is crisp and tangy. It initially releases notes of licorice, berries, and fruit, accompanied by sweet spices, before smoky aromas gradually unfold on the palate. These include tobacco, tanned leather, roasted wood, and dark chocolate. The overall impression then evolves towards a more indulgent character, with pastry and fudge notes that become smoother as the aromas meld together. The finish brings back the herbaceous notes perceived on the nose.
The finish: long and structured, it revolves around herbaceous notes, dominated by a persistent licorice, supported by a smoky and empyreumatic character. Blackcurrant and pomegranate return in regular touches, bringing freshness to the heart of the roasted and smoky notes. A hint of cooked rubber will linger for several minutes.
