Tres Hombres Matinik 2015 Captain's Choice 51.5°: Description and customer reviews

Tres Hombres Matinik 2015 captain's choice is an agricultural rum distilled at La Favorite in Martinique. After nearly 5 years of aging in bourbon barrels, the distillery entrusted this rum to the sailors of the sailing ship Tres Hombres. After ageing in Madeira and Armagnac casks, they brought it aboard. The crossing took 6 months, and the boat covered 3880 nautical miles.

The rum thus benefited from dynamic ageing, giving it greater contact with the oak. It also allowed it to oxygenate perfectly, gleaning a few marine notes along the way.

The bottle is designed by Lynx Guimond, the artist who designed the figurehead of the sailboat.

WARNING the wax that "coats" the cap of this bottle has a flaw. It is very liquid and tends to shrink at the neck. As a result, the cork is not "sealed" and can be removed and replaced without removing the wax.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose first takes us towards very green vegetal notes, but not immediately to cane. Instead, we imagine something medicinal, resinous and fresh. The wood, too, brings a lovely freshness, accompanied by a welcome liveliness that gradually introduces fresh cane.

The aeration gives us an incredible and rather unprecedented effect, as it takes us directly into the boat's hold. We find our oak cask trapped in a wooden hull where the atmosphere is very humid.

On the palate, the rum is frank and peppery, yet round and well-balanced. Our unique, characteristic damp wood is back, and we imagine the juice of a ripe cane, with a hint of salt.

The finish leaves us with a concentrated rum that sticks to the lips, even if no sensation of sweetness disrupts the tasting.

"A surprising and unique woodiness that takes us aboard the Tres Hombres for a few moments...".
