Glenmorangie: from Highland Queen to refineries

It all began in the town of Tain. A brewery was built and, in 1843, William Matheson converted it into a distillery.

It remained a family distillery until it was acquired by the Glenmorangie Distillery Company in 1887. Then, in 1918, Macdonald & Muir ans Durham & Co bought the latter. The aim was to use Glenmorangie to make blends such as Highland Queen.

Later, long after the Second World War, Glenmorangie was once again sold as a single malt. Given its success, the distillery increased its production capacity several times over.

However, Glenmorangie made its mark in the 1990s. The company launched a series of sherry and Madeira affinages, an unprecedented signature at the time.

Glenmorangie: Bill Lumsden & maturation

Prestige versions also exist, such as the 18-year-old, Signet, Grand Vintage and Pride 1974, 1978 and 1981.

Last but not least, experimental versions are offered every year. After Bacalta in 2017, Spios takes over in 2018. Read less
