Talisker is the only distillery on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. It was founded in 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, in the town of Carbost. The distillery was enlarged in 1900. However, financial difficulties led to its sale to the Distillers Company Limited (now Diageo) in 1925. At the time, triple distillation was used. The buyers decided to switch to double distillation in 1928.
In 1960, a fire destroyed the distillery, but some of the old elements were saved, such as the serpentine condensers. Today, the distillery boasts two wash stills and 3 spirit stills.
The water used comes from 20 different sources, all of which run through peat fields, giving Talisker whisky its unique character. Read less
