The Balvenie
The Balvenie is a distillery from Speyside, Scotland.
The Balvenie: Success Story and David Stewart
It was originally called Glen Gordon and was built in 1892 by William Grant. The chosen location was next to Glenfiddich, in a disused building: the Balvenie New House. The following year, production began.
Then, in 1923, after the death of William Grant, his son John expanded the distillery. In 1957, the capacity of The Balvenie was increased again.
The 1970s were a turning point. The Balvenie launched its very first single malt. Also in 1974, David C. Stewart is its cellar master (the fourth in history) before becoming the emblem of the distillery.
Later on, the 1990s offered a new perspective. One can mention the creation of Kininvie in 1990, a distillation room which works completely separately. Moreover, in 1993, The Balvenie became one of the first distilleries to offer a finished single malt. This is the DoubleWood, aged in bourbon casks and finished in sherry casks.
