Puerto Rico
The island of Puerto Rico is part of the American territory, but is not directly incorporated into the United States. The island is located in the Greater Antilles, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
Rum production in Puerto Rico is a recent phenomenon. The "rum" tradition is less important than in neighboring islands. Indeed, it was not until the 1860s that French, Dutch, English and Spanish settlers arrived on the island, taking advantage of the success of sugar to plant cane.
In the end, the Spanish style of rum-making took over. Puerto Rico produced light-alcohol rums called "Ron", based on the same model as Cuban rums.
Today, Puerto Rico is the leading exporter of rum to the United States (exporting over 70% of the rum consumed in America).
The main rums produced in Puerto Rico are Bacardi, Caliche and Don Q. Read less
