Bielle 2014 Brut de fût 56,5° : Description and customer reviews

Bielle 2014 Brut de fût 56.5° joins the list of vintage rums expected every year. This Savalle column-distilled agricultural rum hails from the island of Marie-Galante in Guadeloupe, nicknamed "the island of a hundred mills".

It matures for 7 years in bourbon oak barrels before being transferred to ex-sweet white wine barrels. Bottling will take place in 2021, without reduction or cold filtration.

Nico's tasting notes

The first nose is as if waxed, varnished, with soft wood gorged with beeswax. A hint of menthol and aroma blows through the glass, lightening the woodiness. It also reveals a ripe but fragile cane, delicate and diaphanous.

With aeration, cane mingles with fruitier aromas, recalling the orchard fruits so dear to Bielle. Mirabelle plum and peach gradually assert themselves, while remaining linked to candied vegetal, for a profile that is at once gourmand, subtle and delicate.

The palate offers a perfect balance of power and flavor. The attack is warm, round and enveloping, with no sharp angles or burning spice. The cane and its cooked juice show hints of licorice and anise, which melt into menthol and aromatics. The rum is both candied and fresh, always balanced and aromatic.

The finish is lightly woody and peppery, with hints of fresh cane.

"A very well-balanced Bielle that coats the taste buds with harmonious flavours... "

By comparison, the Bielle 2014 batch 1 showed a more powerful, earthy nose, and opened with riper, almost dried fruit. The palate was very fruity, with riper cane juice. The finish was quite similar to that of batch 2, with perhaps a little more freshness.

The Bielle 2014 batch 3, on the other hand, is more jammy, rounder, with accents of fresh cane and spices that balance the whole, evoking the beautiful terroir of Marie-Galante.

Straightforward and typical of Marie-Galantais bruts: neither too much nor too little. The right balance, not far from perfection (in my opinion).
