Compagnie des Indes Réunion Savanna 12 ans 2011 56,8° : Description and customer reviews

Compagnie des Indes Savanna 12 ans is a molasses rum produced on Reunion Island by the Savanna distillery. The distillery has been based in Bois-Rouge since 1992. It can distill both traditional molasses rum and rhum agricole.

This selection was made by Florent Beuchet, the French bottler who needs no introduction. This rum was distilled in the Savalle copper column in March 2011. Bottled brut de fût in March 2023, it underwent tropical (70%) then continental (30%) aging. Aging began in an ex-cognac barrel, then continued in an ex-bourbon American oak barrel.

This is cask number RS4651, which issued a total of 257 numbered copies.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is a spicy, multicolored firework display that completely repaints the glass. Like a handful of curry and garam masala thrown in your face, the rum awakens and delights as much as it invites you to travel. Its concentrated core seems to conceal a beautiful complexity, sewn notably with ripe exotic fruits.

Aeration reveals a few surprises, such as a muskiness that veers towards leather or soy sauce, as well as something resinous, almost camphorated and medicinal. We also discover some extremely candied fruits, such as prunes and quinces.

The palate is amply spicy and woody, with green tannins taking on ochre hues, followed by brighter nuances of cherry and toffee apple. The mid-palate then leaves plenty of room for delicacy and pastry, overlaying a brew of very ripe exotic fruit with a mess of pits and a vegetal milk tinged with pine resin.

The finish is long, slightly bitter and marked by flavors of prunes, marzipan and kirsch.

"Well-anchored tannins magnified by the irresistible exoticism of this rum from Reunion..."
