La Maison du Rhum Guatemala Botran batch #5 Solera 48°: Description and customer reviews

La Maison du Rhum Guatemala Botran batch #5 is a column-distilled rum made from cane honey. It is a cooked cane juice halfway between pure juice and molasses.

Aging is carried out according to the solera principle: young rums are blended with older rums throughout the aging process. The casks used are old bourbon casks, re-toasted bourbon casks and sherry casks.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose , a certain lightness manifests itself in the first moments, with a slightly ethereal breath which carries some freshly floral and tangy notes. We thus maintain a certain altitude, which begins to gain thickness in the form of a stone of candy sugar.

With aeration, the rum takes the form of a soft cloud, where all the notes felt at first nose are found melted and cozy. White oak and its characteristic vanilla appear, just enhanced with a hint of roasting.

The mouth offers an attack which is directly in line with this second nose. White oak and vanilla offer round and frank flavors, perfectly served by a power adjusted to the millimeter. Then, quickly, we reach a clearly drier and fuller-bodied oak, rather sulphurous and roasted, almost tarry, which is nevertheless accompanied by a certain roundness.

The finish is made with dried and concentrated fruits, like black fruit or quince paste.

“A vintage that contrasts with the usual style of the Botran house, offering a slightly more robust character…”

In comparison, the nose of Maison du Rhum Guatemala Botran batch #3 Solera shows the same light and tangy notes at first, then evolves into more concentrated, more candied, even heavier aromas, while this batch n°5 leaves more room for the wood. In the mouth , batch n°3 is rounder and less powerful (6 degrees separate the two batches). It shows less character and focuses more on gluttony.
