La Maison du Rhum Sainte-Lucie batch 5 2013 is a molasses rum produced by Saint-Lucia Distillers. This is the only distillery on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, located in the Roseau Valley.
The rum was distilled in 2013 in a Coffey continuous distillation column. It was aged for 9 years in a tropical climate in first-fill American white oak barrels (which contained only one bourbon).
4618 bottles were issued in 2022 for the La Maison du Rhum collection, which brings together some of their country's most renowned distilleries.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose immediately reveals the fruity side of the St. Lucia rum spectrum, even though this is a column distillate. Peaches and citrus gradually give way to brighter oranges, such as blood oranges.
Aeration brings out the wood more, but without any real woodiness. Let me explain: it's more the notes of nuts and sweet spices that come through, skilfully perfumed with the elegant essences of the fruits first perceived.
On the palate, greedy, toasty oak is the undisputed star. It offers a full-bodied texture, a chewy mouthful of vanilla, toasted coconut milk, blond tobacco and toasted, caramelized nuts. Burnt oak mingles its charred dust with a handful of spices, but quickly gives way to the rum's overall roundness.
The finish chooses to retain nuts above all, and pecans in particular, for a profile that leans towards maple syrup.
"Despite a fruity first impression, it's the greed of the American oak that takes care of regaling us..."
